To the wonderful members who populate the Aengel’s Eyrie:
Though I am usually quite agreeable, I do have a few peeves. I think these would generally be considered common courtesy in the world of forum role-plays; the sort of things that make the plot run smoother and surely contribute to lower levels of tension between members. A few of these are noted in other housekeeping threads throughout the Eyrie, but it seemed to me it was about time to put up a reminder and add my own two cents to the equation.
These little notes of mine aren’t all rules – I’m not about to make my job that much harder and attempt to enforce them, and a handful would be hard to track anyway. But still, these points should be considered, and I really do hope the advice is followed. I personally am more likely to participate in a thread with you if you adhere to these points, and I imagine most members feel the same way.
Well, here we go. Ehem…
• READ THE POSTS IN YOUR THREAD. Respond to what your thread-mates actually wrote. This might be one of my biggest peeves ever. If I take the time to write out a response, and it’s obvious in your post you really didn’t take the time to read it…yeah. It’s a total muse-killer. I’m not about to waste my time posting a reply if you basically just want to sit around and write by yourself.
• READ CHARACTER BIOS/RACE DESCRIPTIONS. This ties in a bit with the previous note. I’m not expecting you to know the other character’s history like the back of your hand (horrible expression by the way, as I for one don’t know the back of my hand all that well), but it is nice to know a bit of background, don’t you think? These things are posted for a reason! It can give your thread some direction, and maybe even add a bit of drama. And oh the plottage! Speaking of such things, misspelling a character’s race/planet is a pretty big peeve of mine as well – would it really take that much time to double check? Of course, just because you know about the other character doesn’t mean your character has the same information…
• REMEMBER YOUR CHARACTER HAS FLAWS. Now I know this is in the rules. Our characters, while often constructed of pure awesome, are not really infallible gods (that’s right, even Barroes =/= god, just don’t tell Sole. that ^^). They don’t know everything; they can’t be a skilled elephant trainer, linguist, gun-wielder, fry cook, award-winning journalist, and know every detail about their fellow Eyrie pals. No one is an expert in everything, and we all make wrong assumptions. Your character can’t beat everyone. Sometimes they get shot, stabbed, or otherwise mauled. Sure sometimes they know someone is sneaking up on them, but other times they don’t. Even the most skilled assassins have weaknesses. No one wants to start a thread with a character that is going to walk all over them, be a know-it-all, and basically make their character look like complete shit. In short, characters that make mistakes and don’t always act the role of the awesome assassin are far more likely to get my attention than Lord/Lady Perfectpants.
• PRIORITIZE & MAKE YOUR ROUNDS. This is another one of my bigger peeves. If you have a thread (or more than one thread) going with another member you haven’t responded to, don’t start an open thread just for shits and giggles! It’s a bit of a slap in the face if you’ve been waiting around for your thread-mate to post, and when they finally do it’s just to put up a random open thread that has no plot or purpose. If I have to keep waiting and waiting for a response, you’re going to get the same delay – that is if my muse doesn’t die of boredom in the meantime. If you have more than one thread open, try to make your rounds and keep everyone happy. It’s more important to me to satisfy my current thread-mates than to make an open thread…And besides, we have other open threads you could respond to before you make your own! Share the love. On a similar note…If you have run out of muse for a thread, just let the member know in a polite way. It’s nothing against them or their skill, but it’ll give them the opportunity to move onto another thread and won’t make them feel like they’re always getting shafted.
• BE ACTIVE. I know we’re all guilty here. The lazy (and catastrophic -_- days of summer had us all slacking, but our renewed posting policies should keep all members posting at regular intervals. I think my point here is pretty obvious – the more active you are, the more I will want to post (and plot) with you! I realize we all have lives outside of the Eyrie, but what’s the point of being a part of the forum if you’re not actually going to keep up with it? We all have to keep our lives in balance – school, homework, jobs, families, social lives, and the occasional (or common) family/medical crisis – but I don’t think our one post per week policy is asking for all that much commitment.
[/ul]
In short, you’re here to participate in the forum. Show some care, thought, tact, and interest, and I’m sure you’ll have fellow members just pounding on your door for a thread. That aspect aside, it’s just common courtesy! Show members respect and you will get it back in return.
Now go out there and get some quality posting done!
Sincerely yours,
